Personality: Homestuck spans over the course of about 7 years for Dave. When it begins, he's a 13 year old and a fairly typical 13 year old boy at that. He's obsessed with irony and keeping a cool air, he listens to bands you've never heard of, he's an amateur photographer with an amateur photo lab, he collects dead things and puts shitty art on the internet for the world to see and enjoy. His friends exist entirely on the internet, but he shows genuine concern, interest and affection for them in bizarre ways with meaningful gifts and sarcasm.
Dave's humor is extremely important to who he is, he likes off the wall bullshit, but he also likes to craft obscure references, rich vocabulary and sarcasm into his responses. He rambles both through text and in person, and he will ramble to himself if he has nobody to talk to. This is partly because he gets lonely and partly because he really likes to get into conversations with himself and doesn't know how to stop all of the tangents he's starting. He puts himself into all of his hobbies, whether it be rap, art or photography. He doesn't necessarily hone and refine his skills so much as he makes things unique and personal to himself.
His rough upbringing shaped his harsh opinion of himself. He's extremely insecure, but hides it under his "cool" and detached mask. He's had to fend for himself for a long time with a weirdly involved but negligent guardian. From the beginning he's had his basic needs covered but his emotional needs left hanging, along with some pretty violent attempts to toughen him up for a future he didn't yet comprehend.
In a way, it did help. Dave came into the game relatively competent because his Bro taught him to fight. He's a pretty reliable guy, despite being an ass, he's there in a pinch and would do anything to help his friends. This is proven through many sacrifices by many variations of Daves over many timelines. He takes literal bullets for his friends.
Of course, his ability to use copies of himself from alternate timelines and abuse time travel comes with a bit of an emotional toll. Watching yourself die over and over gets extremely exhausting. His powers can become cumbersome and convoluted, and he eventually distances himself from them and tries to shirk responsibility where he can. It takes a while for Dave to step up, sometimes, but when he steps up he does a bang up job of it.
Dave becomes a good shoulder to cry on and an excellent, if not awkward, source of conversation. His friendships develop from mockery and trolling to genuine connections with people gradually, mostly with the help of gratuitous murder and trauma.
Eventually, Dave learns enough about himself, his shit and his life to realise some of his issues aren't 100% his fault, some of his hang ups are stupid and that he can reconcile with some of the people in his life and put the bad shit behind him. Dave goes from being an insecure, awkward, pretentious prick to an insecure, awkward, pretentious prick who is working on his shit and is actually a pretty nice guy. He searches long and hard for very particular presents, he'll talk out relationship problems, throw you a dope birthday party and chill when you need him.
Abilities/Weaknesses:
TIME TRAVEL: His time travel abilities are three fold.
First: The ability to skip back and forth briefly through time, this is extremely useful for taunting and for fighting.
Second: The ability to take multiple people backward and forward through great lengths of time. He takes everyone thousands of years into the future so their new universe so he can probably take all of his friends half an hour forward so you don't have to wait for the pizza guy.
Third: The ability to create time loops that can only be fixed with a dead Dave. This gives him the power to create multiple Daves for fights or traps, but it means those Daves need to die to fix time, as it were.
